Modern Warfare 2's Keith David talks voice acting

Q&A: Veteran actor discusses working on 2009's most anticipated title, his roles in Halo 3, Mass Effect 2, and the voice-acting process in games.

It's not every day that one of the most mellifluous voices of all time leaves you a voicemail. But that's just what happened when, due to a scheduling mix-up and an ill-timed bathroom break, I found this message waiting on my phone.

Keith David, in the flesh.

"Hey Tor, this is Keith David. Sorry I missed you. You can get me back at [NUMBER REDACTED]. Thanks so much. Bye-bye."

Armed with David's cell phone number, this reporter got the opportunity to talk with the veteran character actor. Besides an expansive voice-over career that includes his Emmy-winning narration of the PBS series The War, he has worked on around 150 films, television shows, and games. David's big-screen resume ranges from There's Something About Mary to director John Carpenter's 1988 cult sci-fi classic They Live. On television, he was cast in two popular 1990s animated series: Gargoyles and Todd McFarlane's Spawn, where he voiced the titular demon superhero.

However, to gamers, David will be best remembered for voicing the rogue Sangheili known as the Arbiter in Halo 2 and Halo 3. David also lent his distinctive baritone to the role of Captain Anderson in Mass Effect and to gang boss Julius in Saints Row and its sequel. He has also voiced roles in the game version of Coraline, Transformers: The Game, and Lords of EverQuest.

While Halo 3 saw first-day sales of over $170 million in the US, David's next game may be his biggest yet. Last month, Infinity Ward revealed that David would be joining the cast of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which analysts believe may become one of the best-selling games ever upon its November 10 release. Recently, GameSpot got to talk to David about the upcoming actioner, a possible Mass Effect 2 role, and the craft of voice acting in games.

GameSpot: I guess the first question with Modern Warfare 2 is, how did you get involved in the project?

Keith David: Somebody asked me.

GS: So they wanted Keith David, specifically?

KD: Yeah.

GS: When did you actually record your vocal sessions?

KD: I'm still working on it. We still have one or two more sessions to go.

GS: So you're still recording?

KD: You know, what happens is, we go in, we do some, and then they fit it into the game. Then we go back and, if we have to, do something over. But we save the explosive stuff for last, the heavy battle stuff.

David's commander will train US soldiers to fight enemies like these.

GS: So you kind of start off with your basic dialogue and then get into the actual bloody mayhem Black Hawk Down kind of thing?

KD: Yeah.

GS: So what's the name of the character you play?

KD: I'm playing a commander, but forgive me if I don't remember his name right this second.

GS: So you're playing a US commander?

KD: Yes.

GS: Is it a major role?

KD: Well, I haven't seen the whole game yet. But I believe it's a pretty major role. I start training the player and then we take the player into battle. So, I think it's pretty major.

GS: How many lines do you think you recorded for the game?

KD: Oh, my God. Put it this way, I still have 150 lines more to go.

GS: So how many hours do you think that would translate into?

KD: I'm sure all wrapped and done, it'll be 10 hours.

GS: That's just one character, right?

KD: Right.

GS: Were you a fan of the Call of Duty series before?

KD: My son is.

GS: So you'd seen it before.

KD: As I was telling Keith [Jr.], I am so wonderfully impressed with the quality of the graphics. I have been in animation for a while now, voicing animation. One of the things that made me want to be an actor was cartoon voices and narration. So I've been watching cartoons for over 50 years, and I marvel at the way CGI has come in and turned things around.

Now, you know as well as I do, the gaming industry has surpassed, in some way, the movie-making industry as far as first-day bankability. I don't know of a film yet that has made a $150 million on the first day, as some of these games have. Well, at least one of them, Halo 3, has. I don't know of another film that has even come close to that.

Scottish actor Kevin McKidd (Rome, Trainspotting) will be voicing one of the SAS commandos in Modern Warfare 2.

GS: Well, they're already saying Modern Warfare 2 might be the biggest-selling game of all time.

KD: Yeah. It's huge. And as such, what I absolutely adore about [Infinity Ward producer] Keith Arem and his work and his team is that they're painstaking. This game looks incredible. I don't play these games and it makes me want to play because it's so exciting. There's always something happening. I'll watch the situations that the player's getting ready to go in and it's like, "Holy s***!"

You know, if you go on YouTube and you can look at some actual footage of soldiers in Iraq bombing and sniping, and it is as exciting or--in some cases, not as exciting--as the game. In the game, you don't want to sit around waiting for the two hours for the enemy to actually show up.

GS: I interviewed Ray Liotta in 2002 and we talked about his work on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. He said he had to watch the developers act out some scenes because the graphics weren't done. How far has the process come since then?

KD: Oh, no. My graphics are done. I actually get to watch the thing itself, and the creators, they explain what I'm about to go through. And I'm not always the first one. Some of the other voices are already on there. Tomorrow, I think, is my last session. I'll go in and they will have put in what I voiced up until now. So, I'll get to hear some of the stuff I've done already, which is exciting. [NOTE: Interview was conducted last week. --Ed.]

GS: Does that really help you in your performance, to hear yourself?

KD: Every little bit helps.

GS: Has the process come along since you did Halo 3 and Mass Effect?

KD: Yeah. It's the nature of the development of electronic equipment. As soon as you get a piece of technology, that's only the latest piece that they let you see. It's not that they don't have a generation after that prepped and ready. So, of course, it does improve. You know, sometimes quantitatively, you know.

GS: So your first game role was in Lords of EverQuest in 2003?

Game graphics have come a long way since David's first game gig, 2003's Lords of EverQuest.

KD: Yeah. What I remember about that, you could fill a thimble with. But what we did back then, it might as well have been pinball, because they've come so far.

GS: Now, as someone who has done a lot of voice-over work, are you seeing traditional actors becoming more interested in games as a legitimate extension of the acting craft?

KD: Yeah, I mean, just as it has in the voice-over world. There was a time when commercials were only done by announcer guys. And the announcers were mostly sports announcers, news announcers, and they had a kind of delivery that was stentorian and impersonal in a way. That was the style of the day.

Now we've come a long way since then and the style of commercials have become more like storytelling, more inviting, you know. You're very much more personable. And this is also true in the gaming industry. Now it's not just a disembodied robotic voice telling you what to do; now it is the sergeant talking to you personally, the player.

So now, yeah, we're talking to the player directly. We're interacting with the player. In fact I don't know if the word "interactive" was even in the vocabulary 30 years ago.

HALO 3 & VOICE-ACTING RESIDUALS
GS: Now, you mentioned Halo 3, which actually made $170 million on day one in the US alone. Was it kind of strange being part of such a huge project that was so massively hyped by Microsoft?

KD: Well, I mean, I didn't know anything about that. The result--that took place later. I don't even think they knew. I mean, they didn't know until after the first two [Halo games] came out that it would be as big as it was.

David got a flat fee for playing the Arbiter in Halo 3, which went on to make nearly $377 million in the US alone.

So, I try not to put my mind into other people's pockets, as far as who participates in the profit and whatever. Because we look at those numbers and we are awed by them, because they're awesome numbers. But you don't know how much money they had to spend in order to get there. So, you don't know who has to be paid back. Everybody's got expenses, you know.

Just like the fighter that makes a $50 million dollar purse. He's got trainers to pay, he's got gyms to pay, and there's all that back stuff that he's got to pay. So, as good money as it is, who knows how it gets doled out?

So, I mean, I am happy with what I get, though it would be great if one of these days we get to get residuals.

GS: Yeah, that was actually going to be my next question. The recent threatened Screen Actors Guild strike was partly due to residuals from the Internet. Now I've heard that game voice actors don't get residuals, as you would in a film or a television show.

KD: That's true. We do not participate in residuals.

GS: Do you ever foresee that happening?

KD: You know, I would like to see that happen, for obvious reasons. However, it's my philosophic belief about the world to say that we have seen in more than one circumstance around the world how absolute power corrupts absolutely and greed will destroy.

Now I mean, the producers and the creators, hopefully they are making money. But when you start making multimillions of dollars and billions of dollars, why shouldn't the people who helped you get there also participate? One of these days, it'll come to a head. But that may not be in my lifetime, and I don't worry myself about that. Yes, I do wish I could participate because it would be only fair, in the same way that we have always participated residually in the products that we participate in.

Captain Anderson, David's character in Mass Effect, might not be in Mass Effect 2.

I mean, in the karmic sense, everything goes around and comes around. You see examples all the time, when you see some of the great philanthropists, the manner in which they give back to the everyday guy who helps to make them get where they are. Those people are far happier than the people who die worrying about every penny they pinch.

GS: So, are you going to be in Mass Effect 2 as well?

KD: I hope so. I hope they ask me. We'll see.

GS: Is there some kind of particular genre of game you want to be part of?

KD: I like to work, man. That's my criteria. I do it and because of the quality and caliber, and the creators are becoming more creative and therefore it's more fun to participate in.

GS: Is there a game out there you wish you had been in?

KD: I'm not familiar enough with the games to say, but I do know that my son plays a lot of games. I'd like to play a lot more games.

GS: According to your IMDb page, you've been in around 150 games, movies, and television shows. Are there any of those that you would have liked to have seen turned into a video game?

David in They Live.

KD: Gargoyles. Spawn. I would have loved to see Spawn: The Game. What would that look like? Wow. That could be fun. [NOTE: There have been several games based on the Spawn franchise. There was also a 1995 Sega Genesis game based on Gargoyles. --Ed.]

GS: I took an impromptu survey of guys around the GameSpot offices, and They Live came up as a dream game adaptation from your resume. Is there going to be a sequel to that, by the way?

KD: I've heard some talk; there's nothing confirmed as of yet. Like I said, hopefully when it comes up, I'll be there.

Raj the Showman Review

Kannada film Raaj, the Showman directed by Prem starring Puneet Raj Kumar [ Images ] and Priyanka Kothari is a technically good film with fantastic music. Puneet Raj Kumar has shouldered the responsibility of the entire film with his brilliant performance and fights. But the film suffers. And that is mainly because of director Prem's half- hearted work.

The film belongs to Puneet who shows tremendous energy while performing a role that lacks consistency. Fights have always been his strong point but they have been overemphasised in Raaj. He has also tremendously improved in his dubbing work.

Harikrishna who has composed the music and Krishna who has worked behind the camera have done their work remarkably well. Hari Krishna's background score is also top class. The way Krishna has shot the two songs -- Hey Paro and Poli Ivanu -- deserves appreciation.

Raaj is made with huge production values, lilting music, top class cinematography, lovely choreography and some superb fights just required for a superstar. It has everything except a good script (by director Prem himself) and a credible story line.
His idea of having a song with the five heroines of Dr Raj Kumar has failed to make any impact.

To be fair to Prem, there are certain sequences that are good like the hero's introduction scene in the prison and the twist at the interval.

The story goes like this: Muththuraj who stays happily with his parents in a village, has only one desire; to be an actor. He comes to the city to become a junior artist in films. An associate director who has full confidence in his talents starts his new film with Muththuraj as the hero. But the film's heroine Parvathy walks out. Sensing that his chance to become a hero will be under a threat, Muththuraj starts pestering her to work with him.

Meanwhile, one of her relatives who has underworld connections wants to marry her. She is forced to escape with Muththuraj. The second half deals with how Muththuraj saves Parvathy and realises his dream.

Puneet has given a brilliant performance as Muthuraj. Priyanka's lack of talents is more than compensated by her skin show. Muni and Aadi Lokesh score well as the villains. Shankar Aswath shines in a small role.

All in all, Raaj is just an average film that will be remembered only for Puneet's performance and the songs.

Email requests to webmasters

I know you have read about this a large number of times but stull there is something missing. You can not get a back-link or a link exchange from quality and related sites by simply shooting an email to the webmaster. Do it my way to gain success. First put a link to the site you want to exchange links with on a page of your site, the page should have some content on it and must have some traffic. The page you are putting a link on must also be easily accesssable by search engine bots. After you have done this, wait for a few days and let the webmaster realize he is getting traffic from your site. Once he sees traffic coming to his site from a page, he will visit the page and analyze it. After a few days write to him that you want to exchange links with him and you will be happy to keep his link on your site if he is willing to link back to your site. Try this and get quality back-links from related sites.

Establish other related sites and blogs

I love doing this. Apart from giving me some good back-links it also increases the number of sites I own and sooner or later every site start fetching some traffic which means it pays helps me make more money.
I thought the title of this was self explainatory, in case it was not let me explain. Make some sites or blogs with related keywords to your site and get back-links to your site from them. No need to make huge sites. Comments

Commenting gives you a free backlink but don't take it for granted. Try to comment something related to the topic and your comment must add value to the topic. The owner of the article should not think that you haven't even read the article and you are commenting just to get a back-link. Please don't add comments like, "nice info", "great article" etc and get yourself blocked. In order to get more benefits from comments, try to find blogs or articles having same keywords as your site and then comment on them.

Although I haven't tries this one myself, but people claim that this is a good way of getting backlinks. All you have to do is submit some articles on article directories. Have links to your site in the text of the article as well as the resource box. When someone will copy your article to his/her blog, you will get backlinks. On-Page Optimization

1. Set a theme - Make sure your title tag, meta-content, headers, and content all match up. Choose meta-tags carefully.

2. Use h1, h2 tags etc. in your headers. Search engines place more relevance on header tags h1 for main heading, h2 for sub-heading etc.

3. Your content should be unique and original. An article should contain atleast 500-1500 words. This step is the most import SEO step which alone can bring massive web traffic.

4. Use inner links. Inner links mean link to your own page. Example ‘HOME’, usually we give our site address as hyperlink. Use as many inner links as possible. Use inner links. Linking increases SEO ranking I mean Search engine ranking.

5. ‘KEYWORD’ – THE MAGIC WORD in SEO is all about keyword. If you want higher ranking in search try to optimize for keywords that has less competition. Swine flu: 9 deaths in 24 hrs, death toll climbs to 17

Pune A 48-year-old man and a 50-year old woman succumbed to swine flu in Pune on Wednesday afternoon, taking the toll in the deadly pandemic to 17.

Gautam Shelar, 48, a driver, was brought from KEM hospital on August 10 to Sasoon Hospital in a critical condition.

In Pune, Nita Meghani, 50, who was admitted to Sasoon Hospital in a critical condition four days ago, died on Wednesday afternoon.

With the latest flu deaths, the toll in Maharashtra due to the viral infection has risen to 13 deaths.

In Pune, the worst hit city in Maharashtra, A 33-year-old man suffering from swine flu died on Wednesday morning at a government hospital in Pune.

Balu Kuland was diagnosed with H1N1 and died at the Sassoon hospital, a senior official said.

A 38-year-old doctor Rupesh Gangurde died of the viral infection at the Nashik civil hospital on Wednesday morning, hospital sources said.

He was admitted to a private hospital on Monday after he complained of vomitting and fever, they said. His blood samples were sent to Pune for testing after which the report tested positive for H1N1.

Gangurde was brought last night to the Nashik civil hospital where he died at 0230 hours, they said.

in Pune, Shrawani Deshpande died at 2.30 AM on Wednesday morning following severe lung infection caused by the virus, attending doctors said.

Shrawani, a resident of Kothrud area, was admitted to Sasoon hospital in a critical condition on August 10 after being referred from Sashwat private hospital, they said.

So far, the flu has claimed a total of 14 lives – one each in Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Thane, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, two in Mumbai and seven in Pune.

As the Centre and the states intensified their battle against the infection, central teams have been despatched to all states and Union Territories after Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of 35 additional secretaries and joint secretaries drawn from various ministries who would fan out across the country.

He briefed the teams personally yesterday before they were dispatched to the state capitals.

While 14 additional secretaries would go to the big states, the joint secretaries would got to other states and Union Territories. The teams would stay there for two-three days and would return by August 15.

Azad also spoke to all Chief Ministers and told them to step up preparedness.

The health minister requested the Chief Ministers to chair the first meeting of these teams so that on-the-spot decisions are taken for swift implementation, a senior health ministry official said.

The Central teams will discuss with state governments new guidelines issued by the ministry of health and family welfare with record to capacity building issues such as identification of labs for testing and hospitals in private and public sectors for screening, diagnosis and treatment of swine flu patients.

On the pressure to play at home, Saina said she is not bogged down by expectations.

"Because of the drift from one end, the shuttle was coming faster. And on the other side it's slow. But it's better than it was in the Indian Open when there was more drift," she said.

n a major setback to Adani Powers, the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) has rejected its proposal for operating a captive
coal mine in the vicinity of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) for its 1000 MW power plant in Gondia, home town of civil aviation minister Praful Patel.

Additional chief secretary (revenue and forest) J P Dange on Monday confirmed that his office had received a comprehensive report from the PCCF, saying Adani Powers should not be allotted the 1750 hectare coal block. "We have received the report. It will be placed before the forest minister Babanrao Pachpute as well as chief minister Ashok Chavan for their opinion,'' Dange said.

A senior official said the PCCF has made it clear that if Adani Powers is granted permission to operate a captive open-cast coal mine for its proposed thermal plant, it will have an adverse impact on the environment, particularly on the TATR near Chandrapur.

As per the rules, once a proposal for allotment of a coal block is submitted to the Centre, it seeks the PCCF's opinion on its impact on the environment before further processing the application. In its proposal, Adani Powers has submitted a comprehensive mining plan, rehabilitation plan and wildlife conservation plan to the ministry of environment and forest.

A week ago, Pachpute had told TOI that till the PCCF submits the report, it will be premature to comment on the on-going agitation against the multicrore power project, while Praful Patel had taken the view that a right balance should be struck between environment and development. "We expect that the CM and Pachpute will take a decision on the PCCF recommendations within a week and submit the report to the Centre,'' a senior forest official said.

Barring Praful Patel, all MPs from Vidarbha led by Congress MP Vilas Muttemwar have opposed the proposal for allocation of the coal mine block on the ground that its operation would cause colossal damage to the rich biodiversity in and around TATR and seriously endanger the very existence of tigers in the reserve, rated as the best in India in terms of tiger population.

Guitar Hero 5 Updated Hands-On

Importing songs from previous games and exploring an easier, deeper music studio are the focus of our latest look at Guitar Hero 5.

Generally speaking, the last piece of news leading up to the release of a high-profile rhythm game is the announcement of a complete songlist. So when Activision unveiled the last batch of songs from Guitar Hero 5 a couple of weeks ago, you'd be forgiven for thinking there wasn't much left to show in this latest installment of the seminal rhythm franchise. More to the point: You'd be forgiven, but you'd also be wrong. A few days ago, Activision held an event here in San Francisco to show off some of the big new features it has been keeping under wraps these past few months.

The big news of the night was the announcement of forward compatibility with previous Guitar Hero games. If you take a look at your copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour or the more recently released Smash Hits, you'll see an ID code printed on the back of the manual. You can take that code, enter it into the Guitar Hero 5 Import Songs menu, and download an unspecified number of songs from that game after paying what Activision calls a "nominal relicensing fee" (don't get too worked up; Rock Band 2 made users pay $5 to import songs from the original game). So far, only World Tour and Smash Hits are confirmed, but it looks like other games from the Guitar Hero library will probably be supported as well. This feature is said to work the same in Band Hero and Guitar Hero 5.

The compatibility also extends to downloadable content originally released for Guitar Hero: World Tour. Activision says 152 of the 158 World Tour DLC songs will be supported in Guitar Hero 5. What you'll need to do is download a free update, which adds on new features, such as band moments and vocal star power, that weren't present in World Tour. These songs will then be playable in all the major game modes in Guitar Hero 5, including Career mode and the new Party Play mode that we detailed in our last look at the game.

Another big focus for the evening was the unveiling of modifications made to the music studio that debuted in World Tour, which allows players to create their own songs for the first time in the series. It has been heavily revamped in a number of ways, starting with GH Mix 2.0. Neversoft wanted to take the original studio and make it more accessible from a usability and interface standpoint while adding even more depth for advanced users. In terms of making the system easier to use, all major functions (like record) have been mapped to the five colored fret buttons, which means there's a lot less scrolling around to highlight the option you want to select. You can also rewind and fast-forward through your song using the whammy bar, going slowly by pressing lightly or speeding through the song by holding it all the way down. Additionally, you can go into the new Pattern mode to swap around giant chunks of your song, moving entire verses, choruses, and bridges as easily as you would move colored blocks on the screen.

Neversoft has also devoted a lot of attention to making sure the instruments have a more authentic sound when you're recording songs. As an example, guitar work is now velocity sensitive, which means the studio can tell the difference between a light and heavy strum, reflecting that in your ability to record quiet, subdued parts versus louder parts. You can also add note expressions to guitar riffs, such as bends, slides, and vibrato. If you don't like a particular note, you can edit each specific note with a variety of parameters without rerecording that entire riff. Professional instrument samples have been added to every instrument as well, creating a much more realistic tone than the one offered in World Tour.

If GH Mix 2.0 is for advanced users, then GH Jam is for casual ones. In this mode, you can select a musical style, then jump right in and either play with a complete band made up of your friends or by yourself with automated instrument backing parts provided by the game. You can choose from 14 musical styles that influence the sound of the instruments, including punk, classic rock, heavy metal, and even NES-style chip tunes. You'll get a visualizer on the screen that matches your musical style as you play, including psychedelic colors for classic rock and 8-bit sprites for chip tunes.

Some of the other enhancements you'll find in the studio have to do with the way sharing songs work in GH Tunes. The system of ranking and finding songs other users have uploaded works very similarly to how it did in World Tour, but the big difference now is in how much you can share. The song time limit has been extended from three minutes to 10 minutes, while the maximum number of songs you can upload has gone from five to 50. If there's one bit of bad news, it's that you can't edit songs created in World Tour's music studio and use all the new effects and options, but certainly, the improvements look like they should outweigh the bad. You can start recordings songs on your own when Guitar Hero 5 arrives on September 1.

Dirt 2 Updated Hands-on

We got ourselves filthy battling to X-Games success, then jumped online for some multiplayer action.

When we first saw Dirt 2 properly before E3, we were impressed with how the gameplay was shaping up, new events on show, and the new engine present in all its muddy glory. Since then, we recently got a chance to sit down and play with a near-final build of the game that showed all the race types, how the single-player mode will work, and some multiplayer action.

The marquee events in the single-player tour are the three X-games-branded tournaments, which you open up at regular intervals after achieving a certain amount of success in the standard tour. There are three available--Europe, Asia, and America--which are of increasing difficulty. You can expect to be able to enter the European leg after an hour or so of gameplay.

The X-Games are mixed-discipline three-race events: a quarterfinal, a semifinal and a final. If you finish in the top four in the first two, you make it to the final where you get to go for a podium finish or even an X-Games gold medal. The three events are scattered across the continent in question; in Europe you have a Raid in Croatia--a mix of trucks and buggies charging across a point-to-point course; in Morocco, you have a good old-fashioned Rally; and in London, you have a Rally Cross final around one of the Battersea Power Station tracks.

The second X-games event, in Asia, has a very similar setup, with a Raid event followed by a Trailblazer race--similar to a Rally, but with other cars on the course, thanks to close but staggered starts--and another Rally Cross final. The setup to the stadium rally cross finals is a good one; when you're battling out for first place against some of the game's biggest names--Dave Mirra, Travis Pastrana, and Ken Block feature in Asia, for instance--it really is satisfying to be able to dump your rivals into a wall before taking gold.

These events with their tightly packed Rally Cross finales do act as great highlights in the career season; the finals themselves tend to be packed out with the game's more vocal characters you'll have raced against repeatedly getting to the X-Games and involve lots of radio chatter, as well as personal rivalries being played out on the track. While this is hardly a new feature for racing games, it is nice to see it being implemented well and giving you a sense of personal satisfaction for beating particular opponents.

Your reward for winning an X-Games event is a brand-new branded car and a shedload of both cash and experience points, edging you closer to the next level of events. Dirt 2's Career mode is driven by both and doesn't attempt to thread a story through it--all you need to pay attention to is the amount of money you have in the bank, what events you're eligible for, what your rivals think of you.

The game is looking better and better--as mentioned previously, the way that mud spatters up off the track is impressively realistic, with some of the messier tracks leaving your previously logo-covered car a uniform shade of brown by the end, especially if you happen to roll yourself through a puddle. We also got our first proper taste of the game's soundtrack when taking a look at the extended single-player campaign, and there's a good mix of upbeat pop from the likes of Ladyhawke to indie rock from Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand, as well as other more generic fare that fits well with the game's corporate extreme sports lifestyle atmosphere.

After cutting our teeth in the single-player races to drag ourselves up to and through the X-games, we got the chance to indulge in a spot of multiplayer racing, which turned out to be equally satisfying.

The multiplayer systems we got to test out involved making playlists for events and vehicle types and then racing them, logically enough. You can mix and match event types in a playlist at will and--this is where it gets silly--you can also mix and match vehicle types, throwing together combinations that you'd never see in the main Career mode. Racing down point-to-point gravel courses intended for hardcore rallying in speedy rally cross cars or racing lumbering trucks through courses packed with narrow hairpins can lead to much silliness. Thankfully, the game will tell you when you make choices that are out of line with the recommendations for the track in question, and you can lock your options so that you only get shown appropriate vehicles for any given track selection.

You can also lock options in so that racers are all in manual cars and can't tune their cars before the race. Normally, you can tweak everything from ride height to shift times and brake balance to speed things up as you go along.

Even standard point-to-point rallies work well in this mode, as you see the ghost of whomever you're racing against live on your screen. So you can see just how well you're doing without having to actually worry about your opponent's track position. The rough-and-tumble rally cross events are really good fun, with all the tracks we played on featuring lots of overtaking opportunities due to the width of many of the corners and the ability to find extra room on much of the course to nip around your opponents.

The one problem with multiplayer is the lack of options for AI opponents in rally cross or raid events. When you're system linking to get two-player local multiplayer, many of the courses can seem empty, and you may be used to bombing around the tracks in question with seven other racers. The lack of other local multiplayer is hardly a surprise in this day and age, but it's still a shame not to have the option for split-screen fun.

After taking the time to play the game for a while, we found ourselves craving for a certain branded energy drink, without really knowing why.

Dirt 2 is shaping up to build really well on the good work put down in opening up the Colin McRae franchise beyond the pure rallying world in the first Dirt game. While we still have yet to be convinced that the expansion of the "action sports lifestyle" isn't just an excuse to shoehorn in even more in-game advertising--hearing the event DJs talk about DC Shoes or catching sight of cans of branded energy drinks in your RV add nothing to the game--the gameplay currently looks to be both solid and very good fun indeed. Dirt 2 is unlikely to be a racing game to please the purists, but it could well be a whole hell of a lot of fun.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Review

A few bright spots prove that this clumsy, unsatisfying film tie-in could have been much better.

The Good

Simple, occasionally challenging firefights
Some good boss battles
Enjoyable multiplayer.

The Bad

Constant story interruptions mess with the flow
Oversensitive collision detection makes for clunky movement
Unattractive visuals.

Have you ever conversed with someone who just went on and on about some dumb thing or another that you couldn't care less about? You know, the droning, talkative bore who makes you want to say, "Will you just shut up already?" G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's story is the game equivalent of that same party pooper, interrupting the action so often with poorly written dialogue snippets that you can't get into a rhythm. The battles in this top-down shooter aren't anything special, but the gunplay has a simplicity that will initially appeal to fans of games like Commando and Ikari Warriors. It's too bad that Rise of Cobra so often puts the brakes on its own forward momentum by pointlessly pausing the action over and over again with story exposition outlined by hideous digitized portraits of the G.I. Joe film's stars.

Before each mission in The Rise of Cobra, you choose one of six Joes and then proceed to clear jungles, deserts, and snowdrifts of the Cobra terrorists that stand between you and finishing the game. The Joes' attacks vary, but as a rule, you'll go in with a standard ranged weapon, a supply of grenades or other explosives, and a limited-use special attack, such as Heavy Duty's burst fire. Then, you proceed to run around blowing stuff up using only the D pad and face buttons. It doesn't feel as slick as it should: You can't move and fire simultaneously, and the limited eight-way shooting afforded by the D pad may make you long for the smoothness of a touch-based scheme (the system's touch capabilities go unexplored). Yet when the action is given room to breathe, The Rise of Cobra is fun in the way that many top-down shooters are fun. You mow down legions of baddies, fight against a few interesting bosses, and even wreak havoc in the occasional tank. It isn't bullet hell, but the missions do have some amusing and challenging moments that are enjoyable to tackle.

The missions also have some maddening moments. Every enemy and object has a layer of invisible padding surrounding it, and you'll sometimes face sizable numbers of enemies in cluttered spaces. This weird collision detection makes it easy to get hung up on buildings, girders, walls, and other enemies, and your attempts to tumble away from your foes are often hindered by unseen cushions of air. These cushions seem to exist to provide room for taking cover using The Rise of Cobra's useless automated cover system, which allows you to hide behind certain objects and take less damage. The cover mechanic feels clunky and imprecise, however, so rather than enhance the gameplay, it just gets in the way. It's better to give objects a wide berth and stick to running and gunning, which becomes monotonous but is mechanically sound.

Then there are the endless story snippets. You'll be gunning along happily for 30 seconds, only to have the action halt and a bunch of silly expository dialogue appear on the touch screen, along with unsightly representations of the actors in the G.I. Joe movie. The plain, charmless visuals and clumsy animations don't take advantage of the hardware's capabilities as it is, but these relentless breaks are doubly difficult to look at. It makes the single-player campaign choppy and inelegant; after a while it's hard not to let out a groan every time there's a pause. There are times when the story doesn't cause the action to stop, but the dialogue frustratingly covers up the minimap on the lower screen and sometimes appears in the middle of battle, which means you'll be too occupied to read the dialogue anyway. The story isn't great on its own, and the poor manner in which it's told is disruptive.

Die, pixilated fiends!

If you stick to The Rise of Cobra's limited but likable local multiplayer options, you'll be able to leave the stumbling narrative behind and concentrate on the action. It's unfortunate that every player needs his or her own copy of the game, but if you have three friends with cartridges, you'll find a simple but amusing team-focused experience in here. The mechanical issues with cover and collision detection are still present, but the multiplayer levels are less cluttered, and thus those flaws are less of an issue. There are three modes in all, but you should ignore the lackluster Team Battle mode and jump into either the Warhead or Defend the Base modes. Warhead is a capture-the-flag variant that requires the player returning the warhead to the opposing base to remain in place for a number of seconds until the base explodes. This extra vulnerability is a nice twist that keeps the attention focused directly on the warhead carrier. Defend the Base is also enjoyable and requires one of the two-man teams to destroy a series of objects while the defending team protects them. The mode is entertaining, though it's hard to tell how close you are to demolishing these objects due to inadequate visual feedback. We also experienced moments of slight but noticeable lag in every match we played.

If you don't have any friends with copies of the game, you'll have to stick to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's inconsistent, poorly paced campaign. The core action is based on a proven formula, so it works when the rest of the design gives it the chance. Unfortunately, the additions to this formula--copious written dialogue and an unnecessary cover system--drag the game down. That's too bad, because this film tie-in's potential was greater than the seemingly rushed product that landed on retail shelves.

However chances are that EA will launch Need for Speed Undercover demo in future probably by the mid of next year. On the community forums, there is a post confirming Saints Row 2 patch 1.20 update for the playstation 3 version of the game. This patch would get applied automatically to the game when players restart their playstation 3. Many of you might have noticed Saints Row 2 patch 1.20 already applied to your game. And those who haven't yet got the patch update, should get it soon.

Those who noticed new Saints Row 2 update 1.20 for Playstation 3, can observe it to be very much same to the patch which is being developed for Xbox 360. By the way, to update you, Xbox 360 patch will be coming on March 24.

This Saints Row 2 patch 1.20 adds both general and multiplayer updates to the game as given below:

• A 5 second period of invincibility will be applied to respawning players. Once an invulnerable player performs an attack, the effect will be removed. Invulnerability will be displayed by a special health bar indicator.

Almost once in a month, a new Sims 3 patch is coming. Now has come the Sims 3 patch 1.3 which is such a big fix to the game that it is not possible for us to detail each and every update made by Sims 3 1.3 patch here. Tough every update created by the Sims 3 patch 1.3 is important but we are listing below only few of them.

After getting promoted in a job with a night shift the Sim will only receive the day off if their next shift starts within 8 hours.
Exporting and Sharing a Level 10 Gardener Sim properly maintains their special abilities.
Fixes to Story Progression. Babies will no longer be born to single parents. Player created or controlled households are now “protected” and will no longer be removed through “Story Progression.” Warning: Story Progression will no longer remove previously player controlled Sims. Users who take control of too many Sims in the same game may experience poor performance as the neighborhood can become over populated.
Switching between multiple saved outfits of the same type no longer has the potential to wipe out saved outfits.
Waterlillies now have a smoother level of detail transition when zooming the camera.
Camera memory hotkeys now properly remember floor level.
Certain situations will now properly stop socialization and disallow asking other Sims to join.
Bait picker for fishing has been improved.

Nintendo Isn't Pleased with Its E3 Press Conference

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles took a big step into the direction of its more successful iterations as all of the big companies arrived and made some pretty interesting announcements, the likes of two new Metal Gear Solid games or Left 4 Dead 2.

But one press conference from which many gamers and media representatives expected big news was Nintendo's. Sadly, the Japanese company didn't meet their expectations, unveiling things like Super Mario Bros Wii or the Wii Vitality Sensor, which made a lot of people scratch their heads.

That made Nintendo president Satoru Iwata quite sad, as he revealed to Nintendo Everything that the conference generated a lot of discussions inside the corporation. “As for the media briefing at E3, of course we had many internal discussions after that. Honestly speaking, none of us at Nintendo thought that our presentation at E3 was as good as it could have been. It is apparent that we could not fully convey the charm of our products.”

He exemplified his statements with Super Mario Bros Wii, which was demonstrated by four people on stage. “This year, however, with the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, four people lined up with Wii Remotes was not a scene that no one had ever seen. Those who actually had the chance to play understood how the game would change with four people playing simultaneously, but we could not address that fun sentiment at the media briefing.”

Finally, Iwata added that future press conferences would be focused on telling the fun side of the announcements to both the media and the viewer, whether he was watching it online, on TV or right there in the conference hall. “Now we strongly feel that we need to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products' appeal better at E3 in these times where more people are watching it online via web cast not only in the U.S. but all around the world, than the number of audience who actually watch it in the theater.”

Let's just hope that Nintendo will have something interesting to show next time it makes a press conference, because that is the most important thing of all.

Games for Windows 3.0 Released, Anti-Piracy Measures Included

It's hard to believe it but Games for Windows Live is two years old and Microsoft seems determined to push the service forward, despite claims from gamers that it provided lousy matchmaking and that it was badly integrated with videogames.

Last week, the Redmond-based company released version 3.0 of the software, which includes a slew of new features designed to make it a more powerful anti-piracy tool while also adding in game marketplaces and account management.

Maybe the biggest change is that players can now buy and then download new content for one of their titles while still being in the game. Fans of Fallout 3 who are running out of places to explore can go to Games for Windows Live, set up a payment system via a credit card and then access the marketplace and download Mothership Zeta or Broken Steel without the need to exit their session.

The content will then be downloaded and installed and ready to be accessed. Microsoft believes that the new feature will allow for more impulse buys and will bring in more revenue from the service.

There are also two new anti-piracy solutions added to Games for Windows Live, which will be available to videogame developers come fall. Zero Day Piracy Protection will make sure that the game executable cannot be run before the official release date, while Server Side Authentication creates a link between the game license and the Gamertag that you own, meaning that the game can then be installed and played on any PC as long as you use the same identification data. The Zero Day Piracy Protection measure might be more controversial as it could make imported titles unplayable for some gamers.

Games for Windows Live is in direct competition with other digital distribution services like Steam from Valve, Impulse from Stardock or GamersGate from Paradox Interactive.

EA Boss Doesn't Talk About New Medal of Honor Game

Electronic Arts is one of the biggest companies out there, owning a lot of high-quality and extremely popular franchises. Most of them were made to compete with the ones from Activision, and, for some time, have really gone against the ones from the large corporation.

Such is the case with EA's Medal of Honor series, which has indeed given the first three Call of Duty titles a run for their money. But ever since Medal of Honor: Airborne and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, which were released in 2007, nothing has been heard about any other future installments.

During a recent conference call in which he revealed the company's earnings in the last quarter, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that a new Medal of Honor game was “somewhere out there,” though he was “not yet in a position to discuss specific plans but will do so in due course.” Don't forget that some rumors revealed that a new Medal of Honor: Operation Anacoda, set in the present day, might be made by one of EA's many studios.

But even though such an announcement might be made in the near future, it's safe to say that EA will wait until the hype surrounding Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 title will disappear and everyone will have their horizons clear of any other high-end first person shooters.

The rumors surrounding Operation Anacoda placed its action in modern-day Afghanistan, which still might be a sensitive subject for many people, as highlighted by the controversy surrounding the Six Days in Fallujah project that was scheduled to be published by Konami but was eventually dropped because of the disapproval from many organizations.

Hopefully Medal of Honor fans will find out some news surrounding their favorite franchise in due time. Until then, we can enjoy other shooters.

Guitar Hero 5 Is Backward Compatible

Guitar Hero 5 is coming to the PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360, the PS2 and some portable devices on September 1, and Activision is counting on the new title in its old series to attract a lot of music lovers with its 85 all new tracks and with the fresh features enabling a better band experience for those who play it. And Activision is now talking about how tracks from games like Guitar Hero World Tour and Smash Hits can be imported into Guitar Hero 5.

The company is saying that a fee will be involved, mainly because of licensing issues, and that not all tracks will be importable initially but more than one hundred songs will be added to the game via this method.

Tim Riley, who is in charge of licensing content at Activision, told IGN that “It's something we've wanted to do for a while now. They are separate licenses, so we need to go back and re-license previous content. So, songs from World Tour, songs from the download space, songs from Smash Hits that will technically work in Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero had to be renegotiated.” It seems other tracks that appeared in older Guitar Hero installments might gradually make their way into the new game in the series.

The publisher is making sure that it includes something to the tracks when bringing them to Guitar Hero 5 with things like vocal star power and all new band moments added to all the old tracks. Players need to be prepared to see that their old techniques for mastering certain songs are no longer working in the new music simulation.

The import feature will only be available on the PS3, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. If that is not enough to draw players towards Guitar Hero 5, Activision is also announcing that a model of Johnny Cash will be featured in the game.

Brutal Legend Gets Complete Tracklist

Brutal Legend is one of the biggest new titles to appear this fall, right before the winter holiday season. It is also one of the few new properties to have the courage to take on high-end sequels like Uncharted 2 or Modern Warfare 2, which are also due to appear during this season and which will definitely make a lot of people purchase them.

Set to deliver a heavy metal-themed adventure in which famous actor and musician Jack Black will play the lead role of roadie Eddie Briggs, the game, developed by Double Fine studios, led by Tim Schafer, has just received approval to be published by EA in October, after some legal battles with Activision.

Rumble Fighter is not really the latest OGPlanet published online multiplayer but what’s different about it is that the studio has recently launched a closed beta release for the European version of the game, preparing it for its new customers. Those that have an active beta testing account with OGPlanet can download the client and get ready for some serious action packed fighting scenes.

It comes as no surprise that an online multiplayer game released initially only for America and Canada is now trying to reach the European market. Even though the Internet is saturated of online games, the trick is to bring something new in the equation and Ruble Fighter manages to do so by placing the player in an action packed virtual environment where they can directly challenge their opponents in a fast-paced fighting arena.

Story

The background story revolves around a constant fight between good and evil that started when Shadow King, a great warrior and tormented spirit planned to take over the world. When brave warriors tried to stop him, they became drawn to the dark path and transformed into Dark Guardians. As the evil king was finally captured and imprisoned by magical sacred seals, these dark warriors dedicated their lives to destroying the shackles that bound their master so that he could rise again and bring terror into the world.

You come in as a warrior from the good side, highly trained in martial arts combat that has to stop the corruption of the seals. To help improve your fighting abilities, an ExoCore has been created, acting as a power amplifier, boosting your skills and giving you special fighting abilities. Your main task is to stop the destruction of the seals that hold the evil king prisoner by fighting off his disciples.

Gameplay

Action packed and very dynamic, Rumble Fighter was designed to be played either in one on one confrontation or in team combat. Either way, the purpose remains the same, defeating your opponent, which generates an increase of your experience points and your overall stats, resulting in greater damage and increased life.

As soon as you log on into the game, you will be faced with the difficult task of choosing your character. Not only are there four classes you can choose from but they are also gender oriented, giving the player the opportunity to choose between male and female. The first class is the Striker, a warrior with a lot of physical strength and advanced combat skills. Mostly, it’s recommended for beginners because it’s easy to control and you get full hands on action. After morphing, these warriors use their ExoCores to improve their strength and speed, inflicting more damage to their opponents.

Soul Fighters have the ability to hunt their opponents for power and use it against them. Their main strong points are increased speed and maneuverability, making them the perfect weapon in hit and run attacks. Once they reach the morphing status, the ExoCore will allow them to transform into various beasts, increasing all their natural abilities.

Elementalists are part of the third class; they are the sorcerer equivalent to RPG games. They have increased psychic powers that they use to inflict massive range damage but at the same time lack the ability to fight and even defend themselves in close combat encounters. Still, the ExoCore grants them the ability to summon various spirits to their assistance that can do the fighting for them. All they need to do is fall behind and watch from safe distance how their minions wreak havoc.

Finally, Alchemists are the ones that have the greatest defensive and offensive ratings. They are perfect for taking in a lot of damage and in ExoCore mode, they can really inflict a lot of pain to their enemies. Their only disadvantage is that they lack speed and agility, but they compensate by having the highest armor stats from all the classes.

Rumble Fighter has been divided into two game modes: battle mode and ruble mode. Each of them can be played by single players or in team deathmatch, and the purpose is always to fight your opponents to the death. In order to join such a game, you first have to look for a room to join in or you can create your own. No more than eight players can fight at the same time and before you join a game, make sure that you are from the same channel. After each tournament is completed, you will be awarded skill points; thus, you can reach a level up.

In the lobby room, you will notice that there are six different channels that you can choose from. These are mainly difficulty levels that will allow you to search for opponents that match your current level and skills. These are made available progressively; as you gain more experience and reach a higher level up, you will unlock all of them and even take part in tournaments.

As for the gameplay, I can only say that it's among the few online clients that come with cartoonish characters that are very detailed in design, and dynamic in movement. Not only will grownups love to play it, but children will also be interested in creating a character and preparing for some one on one action. Throughout the gaming experience, you will have the feeling of playing a classic arcade game, but things get complicated when you find out that your opponents are not as easy to anticipate.

What you need to remember is that after each level up, you will be awarded some money that you can use to buy upgrades and change the visual appearance of your character. Upon visiting the Item Shop menu, you will be able to change not only visual aspects of you character, such as clothes and accessories, but can also buy artifacts that grant you special combos or increase your overall stats.

From the same menu, you can check out and buy Fighting Scrolls that act as an upgrade to your fighting style. You can choose from jujitsu, kung fu, taekwondo, renegade and street fighting styles that will affect the way your character moves and fights. These are very effective ways of getting the upper hand on your opponent since every style has a flaw that someone else can easily exploit. Combining Fighting Scrolls with the appropriate gear and ExoCore you will create the ultimate fighting machine and will get a long way up the ranking chain as far as the Tournament competition is concerned.

You can also check the condition of your player at any time by entering the My Character menu. Changing their hair, eyes and even the ExoCore that you want to equip them with are only some of the things that you can choose from. As a matter of fact, you can look at this menu as your personal inventory room where you can customize every aspect of your character.

As for the in-game fighting, Rumble Fighter was thought to be a highly dynamic combat arcade with quality graphics and impressive visual stunts and effects. The cartoonish overall design is a nice touch, considering that most online games these days tend to exaggerate with real life condition simulators and effects. The game was designed to focus on the fun part of fighting and not setting the standards for realistic environments and gameplay.

One of the most common gaming modes chosen by everyone is the Moving Screen in Rumble Mode, where players are forced to keep up with the moving camera and avoid falling off the screen. Once the camera reaches a certain destination, it stops and that’s when the fighting begins. Still, you have to be careful, as there are some maps where you can fall off; thus, paying attention to your environment is a must. For instance, if you stand on the edge of a cliff and someone kicks you, you will surely fall down and the game will be over. This goes to show that it’s not all just about fighting and who’s got the bigger muscles, but also about using the scenery to your advantage. You can be a level one newbie and still win against a level 15 player if you push or throw them over the right edge.

Slide kicks, shoulder kicks, kicking while in the air and spinning kicks are just some of the things that you can do. All of these are trigged by the right keystroke combination and the use of consecutive combos can easily get you closer to a flawless victory, especially in ExoCore mode. Special abilities such as deploying spikes from the grown to knock down your opponent should be on the top of your priority list, especially if you get surrounded in a back corner.

Graphics and Audio

Strictly regarding the visual part of the game, Rumble Fighter behaves pretty well in almost all circumstances, all fighting moves being accurate and very dynamic. The gameplay flows smoothly and there are no rendering drawbacks when it comes to viewing multiple combos from all the characters at the same time.

As for the audio part, the lobby soundtrack could use a little diversity and it would be nice if the characters had a voice of their own, mostly because online games are about creating a unique individual that sets them apart in that huge virtual environment. Being the beta version, I’m sure that most of the glitches reported will be carefully analyzed and fixed before the official launch of the full client.

Conclusion

Ruble Fighter is definitely a captivating online fighting arcade type game because it brings together the dynamics of combat games with the online experience. It’s fun to know that you are fighting with a real life person rather the AI, and what’s even better is that you get to combine this with a little RPG style. Buying upgrades, getting a level up, and fighting in a dynamic way are surely the recipe for a great online game where anyone can join, create a character and unleash the hurt.

The Sims 3 Might Be Coming to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360

A listing for a job on Gamasutra seems to indicate that The Sims 3 is being ported to the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and to the PlayStation 3 from Sony. Neither of the two consoles has seen any Sims games adapted for them, which means that a wide array of gamers have never been exposed to the addictive quality of life simulation videogames.

The developer is set to be Edge of Reality, which is working with The Sims Studio, on a multiplatform title. Edge of Reality has said that the game for which it is ready to hire a lead designer has not been announced yet.

The company previously ported the original Sims title to the PlayStation 2 and gamers received it rather well. At the moment, Edge of Reality is also working with Electronic Arts and BioWare to create the Dragon Age: Origins version for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

The Sims franchise has had a strong presence on the Nintendo Wii, with SimAnimals and MySims spin offs launched before The Sims 3 came out. The other two home consoles will likely receive an adapted version of the full Sims 3 rather than a watered down version of the videogame.

The game has been a success since it was released in June. The new iteration is more streamlined and complex than the previous installments, with life time wishes and character moodlets being the main improvements, alongside the ability to freely walk about the in-game neighborhoods.

Electronic Arts has also introduced a well stocked online store with items for the game and is offering players all the tools needed to take screenshots and gameplay videos from The Sims 3 and share them online. Considering that a World Adventures expansion for the title is set to be out in November, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of The Sims 3 will probably not arrive until sometime in 2010.

Blizzard Doesn't Talk About Diablo III but 2010 Might Bring Two Releases

Activision Blizzard is the biggest publisher of video games in the industry, as it wholly owns hugely popular franchises and titles like Call of Duty, Guitar Hero or World of Warcraft, which rake in money by the truckload every time a new iteration or expansion is released to the general public.

During a recent conference call, the company revealed, as you all known, that the eagerly anticipated first chapter of the StarCraft II trilogy, Wings of Liberty, had been delayed and would make its appearance in the first quarter of 2010. Along with it, many other new titles will make their appearance during said period, including new James Bond or Tony Hawk games.

Mike Griffith, the CEO of Activision Blizzard, also said that motive tie-ins in collaboration with Dreamworks would be made for Shrek 5 and How to Train Your Dragon. Also, he saw fit to tease people by saying that a new release would involve an “innovative property in the $4 billion action genre.”

Then, Blizzard Executive Mike Morhaime took some questions, including whether the delay of StarCraft II would affect Blizzard's usual tradition of releasing a game per year. Of course, the question was actually whether or not we could expect Diablo III at the end of 2010, or whether the delay of StarCraft II would push it into 2011 too.

“The move of StarCraft into next year does not impact the schedule,” Morhaime said. “And so it would be correct to conclude that you could expect two releases of Blizzard for next year. But I would not make any conclusions on what those titles would be.”

BioShock 2 Gets Exclusive Multiplayer Characters Still delayed to 2010

BioShock 2 is still set to miss this year's Christmas shopping season but that has done nothing to limit the excitement the videogame is generating among players. And GameStop, the retail chain that is already taking pre-orders for the title, is stocking the fires of fandom by revealing that it will offer two exclusive characters that can be used for multiplayer matches

Pictures of the two characters, which are so far small and grainy, were initially spotted on the official forums for BioShock 2 and players have since traced them to GameStop.

Their names are Blanche the Actress and Zigo the Fisherman, and they are citizens of Rapture that, as the city is being destroyed around them at the end of the first game in the series, are fighting in the corridors for a chance to escape the would be underwater utopia. It's not known at the moment how the two characters differ from one another or whether they will only be available to GameStop pre-orders or whether everyone will get to use them.

BioShock 2 will be telling a single player story focused on a Big Sister intending to remake Rapture in her own image while the player is cast as the prototype for the Big Daddies in a quest to stop her. The developers are promising more visceral combat, with plasmids and weapons usable at the same time, a story bearing the same level of depth and moral choice and new surprising characters as charming as those in the first game.

But the BioShock 2 multiplayer, a first for the series, should be something else, entirely. It's set in the past, as Rapture is being crippled by the sea. Players will create a character, customize it and will have to battle other inhabitants of the city as the corridors around them are being flooded with salt water.

Evil. It is the center point for a lot of video games these days, as many tell the story of a brave and good character going up against the forces of evil and eventually vanquishing them in a tour de force. After that, all is well in the land, peace reigns and everyone can start hugging puppies and kittens until they feel sick.

But luckily for those who prefer to play on the dark side of things, the team at Triumph Studios has created the Overlord franchise, with the first title showing us just how good it is to be evil with your fellow companions and how much better it is to send your loyal minions into the fight while you think of your lovely mistress back at the Dark Tower.

Now the series is back with Overlord II, which promises to bring even more mayhem and feature a new Overlord with an even bigger hunger for power. The minions are also back, alongside a lot of new features like being able to ride mounts. With a new story, written by Rhianna Pratchett, and improved mechanics, promised by Triumph, Overlord II seems like a perfect title. But is it that good or has an evil presence meddled with it? Read on to find out.

Story

In terms of story, this is where the whole Overlord franchise can teach many other games some valuable lessons. Its writer, Rhianna Pratchett, has emphasized the key role of a good story in video games, and how writers should interact with the development team in order for everything to work as a smooth oiled machine.

The first game was filled with amusing characters, interesting twists and some unforgettable moments. The second brings much more than that, as you are now in the armor of a new Overlord, who must go against the Empire, a Roman-like civilization that hates everything related to magic and, subsequently, you and your minions.

In order to sabotage its grip on the land, the Overlord must go on several quests and wreak havoc in a few interesting locations – all the locations in the game are well thought out and have some unique characteristics. The colorful characters and the amusing one-liners from the inhabitants are also quite entertaining.

As in the first game, in a few cities you will meet some lovely female companions whom you can bring to your Netherworld fortress in order to make them your mistresses. Each of the three eligible young ladies offers unique talents and can help customize your Dark Tower. They are also instrumental in helping you defeat the Empire and, as an added bonus, the bedroom scenes are quite amusing.

Gameplay

Overlord II delivers some very mixed gameplay. On the one hand you are treated with some upgraded things as opposed to the first title, like improved minion speed, wider areas of exploration or more destructible things, while on the other hand the buggy camera, stupid AI or very annoying Autosave mechanic are still present.

First of all, the game plays out pretty much like the first one. You are the almighty Overlord, meaning that you can make your minions do all the work for you. They come in four different “flavors”: the Browns are expert fighters; the Reds can absorb fire and are great at long range; the Greens are guerrilla fighters and have a powerful backstab attack; and the Blues can swim around and revive their fallen brethren. The animations and the attention to detail in terms of the minions is great, and you will definitely laugh when you see the little critters wearing peacock feathers, soldier hats or baby seal fur on their heads or bodies.

The Overlord itself can also be customized, as the Dark Tower has a handy Forge, where, at the expense of jewels, gold and other minions, new weapons and armor can be made. The RPG side of the action game doesn't end here, as you can buy upgrades for your minions, increase their skill level and even revive the best soldiers you lost in battle, meaning that you must not worry about sending your most well-equipped minions into battle.

Sadly, battles aren't extremely diverse, as there are only a handful of enemies, and their AI isn't the brightest. Sometimes though, they are present in many numbers and, coupled with some levels being constructed like mazes, might pose a significant threat to your Dark Majesty. But with some patience and clever micro management, it isn't something that hard.

The buggy camera and control system have stayed the same sadly, as you'll often find your camera fixed to minions that run around the area, even though you gave the command to regroup. One of the most irritating parts of the whole control scheme is the sweep maneuvers, when you must hold both mouse buttons and direct a group of minions around the room, on some steep ledges or in a hard-to-reach section. Sounds simple, but almost everything is left to chance; you can't adjust how many minions you want to go, where exactly you want them, what to do when they get there or how they can come back. If the mechanic hadn't been used a lot, it might have been alright, but there are scenes in game where this is everything that you do, making it extremely annoying.

Don't think that you can quit whenever you want though, as the game specifically relies on an Autosave function, which generates a check point every time you find a Netherworld gate, which are few and far in between. Also, once you load up a save, you're transported at your Netherworld Tower, meaning that you must teleport back to where you were and eventually start things all over again.

The boss fights are extremely scripted, to the point where you might encounter glitches that will halt all your progress. Oftentimes the objectives are quite ambiguous, meaning that you will need to start exploring all of the nooks and crannies in the game world or even go online and seek walkthroughs in order to find out just what you need to do in order to advance in the game.

On a lighter note, the mounts for the minions are quite interesting, as Browns can ride wolves, Reds can tackle salamanders and Greens can use spiders. All of them accomplish a specific goal, but you can only use them on certain levels, making them a novelty rather than a useful tool in battle.

Another break from the usual gameplay is the sections where you can man siege weapons, like catapults or ballistas, and where you can command boats. But although they seem novel, they aren't very efficient sometimes, giving you the feeling that you should have taken your minions and do the job properly.

Also, there are some sections where you take control of one minion and make him lead the others through some hard-to-reach places for your dark majesty. These are quite interesting, but will require a lot of strategy, especially when you need to recover the green hive.

Concept

In terms of concept, the whole Overlord series deserves to be applauded for bringing evil to the center of the game's story and making it the main character. The “good” guys in the games that appeared so far have been corrupted by their power and fell prey to their weaknesses. As a character in this new title will say at the end, there is no light without darkness, and the Overlord is a necessary presence in order to balance things out.

This second game brings back a lot of the elements from the first one, but also improves in terms of story and the wider variety of choices available. There aren't many in terms of exercising your dark power, but you do have a few more large quests to accomplish, even though they aren't mandatory to progress the main story.

Graphics and Audio

The first game was applauded for its story and concept, but in terms of graphics it wasn't much to look at. Overlord II, though, is quite a looker, giving almost everything in the game a fresh coat of paint. All of the environments are much more detailed, and let's not forget about the main character or the minions, who are extremely well built.

The other characters look pretty enough, but sometimes they border on ridicule in terms of design and the overall look of the empire. The textures are extremely nice, but enemies do have a tendency to pop in from time to time, even though they are on the side of the room you are standing in.

In terms of audio, you can't say anything to Overlord II. From the extremely funny one-liners said by your minions, to Gnarl's musings and the complaints of the inhabitants of the different cities, you will be amused. The orchestral score is impressive and is a vital part to the fighting sequences in the title.

Multiplayer

The game, despite featuring a top-notch single-player campaign filled with interesting things, also has a multiplayer mode, pertaining to both competitive and cooperative play. In terms of competitive, you can choose, alongside your rivals, to play the Dominate mode, where you must capture sections of the map and hold them against your rivals, or the Pillage mode, where you need to capture portions of a large treasure.

For those who want to collaborate, you will have to choose between Survival, which is basically a Gear of War 2 Horde mode, meaning that you will have to defend yourself against waves of enemies, or Invasion, where you will attack powerful foes alongside your friends.

Overall, although quite fun, the multiplayer modes seem a bit tacked on, as Overlord II is mostly about its intricate story.

Conclusion

All in all, Overlord II sways between two extremes. It is a very funny experience and it's guaranteed to make you laugh once you see your minions dressed up as children or as imperial guards and humming marching tunes, but thanks to the complicated camera and auto save system, it will make you angry most of the times.

If you're looking forward to wreaking havoc against your fellow men with the help of some extremely funny little critters, then Overlord II is definitely something you will love.

In this guide I will give you hints and tips on money making, merchanting, and becoming a millionaire! I’ve personally tried all of these and know what they all work. In this guide I’ll explain how I make over 1 MILLION in a short time! Follow the instructions in my guide and you’ll be a millionaire in no time.

1) I remember when I was a non-member I would buy clay and then turn it into soft clay by using it on a jug of water. I find the fastest way to this is to have 14 jugs in your inventory and the other 14 spaces should be clay. Go to the east bank in Varrock and there is a fountain just to the west, a little north of the path. When did this it was a gain of 70gp each. Doesn’t sound like much but your making more than you think.

2) Get your runecrafting to 50 and go to the runecraft guild/mini game in the wizard tower. The only problem with this is runecrafting takes a really long time to train as a non-member. The best way to train is to make air runes until you can make body runes. Then make body runes until you have 30 runecrafting. Then get earth runecrafting gloves from the fist of guthix and use them until you get 50 runecrafting. The reason you can make money from this is because when you play the mini game in the runecrafting guild you get 1000 tokens if you win every round and one of the rewards is rune essence. Each rune essence is 1 token. So in 5 minutes you can get a maximum of 1000 rune essence.

3) If you have a high combat level (75 at a minimum, 80+ recomended)
kill the level 87 cockroaches under the little house between edgeville and barbarian village (I dont remember what its called). You may not last very long against them but the do drop rune scimitars, med helms, and sq shields. They also drop nature and law runes. There are lower level cockroaches that do have good drops too so if you dont have a high combat level try them.

Other Skills

If you’re just starting out, feathers are a good item to collect and sell. You have an unlimited supply to collect in the chicken coop outside Lumbridge, and you can carry an unlimited amount, meaning you can sell several at once.Fishing is another skill that can make money if you put in the time to build up the level. Once your fishing level is at 35 from catching anchovies and shrimp, catch tuna with a harpoon and sell them at the general store. They sell for around 40 coins each, but that price can vary depending on the store’s supply. By level 40, you can switch to lobster with a lobster trap and sell them at the Grand Exchange.If thieving is your skill, steal silk from Ardougne once you’re around level 20 and then move on to fur once you’re at level 35. You’ll need to sell these at another town like Varrock.

Assassin's Creed 2 Demo - Might not be ?

Assassin's Creed 2 has been officially announced by the Ubisoft and work is going on over it. Ubisoft is in no hurry to release the game until it gets needed anticipation for the game. Lot of talk is going over the game but the queston now is that Is there going to be any Assassin's Creed 2 demo available or not?

We saw the launching of Assassin's Creed, the first game of the trilogy, but there wasn't any demo release for the game. Ubisoft didn't made its plans for launching Assassin's Creed demo because according to the company sandbox styled games doesn't require any demo and gave the example of GTA. Assassin's Creed 2 is also gonna to be sandbox styled, so should we think that there is going to be no Assassin's Creed 2 demo as well.

I think we have to accept this fact. If there is no demo for the first game of the series, then how a demo would be possible fo the next game in the series, Assassin's Creed 2. Not many knows, but let me tell you that Ubisoft once decided to create an Assassin's Creed demo version but dropped it later. So another question is, Will Ubisoft will do the same with second game as well ? My answer will be no. Do you think one person repeat its mistakes again and again? Certainly if Ubisoft comes out with a plans of creating Assassin's Creed 2 demo version, then there will be no reason to look back this time for the company.

Well,whether Assassin's Creed 2 demo releases or not, there will be no impact on the game if the game is full of solid game play. First game of the series has already been a big hit without any demo version been made available. Expectations are if Assassin's Creed 2 also has solid bottom line, then this game will also be a big hit, without the need of any Assassin's Creed 2 demo.

Company is already seeking anticipation for the game before it announces its release date. They don't want to release the game and get the treatment that Prince of Persia sequels got. And presently, Ubisoft has planned the series as trilogy, but words are coming out of its being made into the franchise i.e. more than three games will be launced under the series.

Waiting for Modern Warfare 2 demo. Confused about whether Modern Warfare 2 demo will come up or not. Will Activision simply release a beta for the game? We are confused too. It has been few months now the game was announced but nothing got cleared about Modern Warfare 2 demo or beta version. Activision has put COD folks in doubt by not clearing on releasing playable Modern Warfare 2 demo for PC and other platforms.

The game is scheduled for release late this year and hence many believed that the beta will come up for the Modern Warfare 2 instead of playable demo. Even mixed views are posted on official forums regarding the Modern Warfare 2 demo version.

Because there were playable demos for Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty World at War, this makes us believe that Modern Warfare 2 playable demo will be there as well. Also Modern Warfare 2 demo was shown at E3, which makes us to believe in the launch of the playable demo for the game.

If no demo comes up for the game, then beta version will be there at least. Previously released COd games went through beta testing, so Modern Warfare 2 beta testing will be there at least, if no Modern Warfare 2 demo plans comes up.
